Cooking with Alys

Alys hosted a Dream Dinners party this past week. We tried our hand at meal assembly. The first one was a little crazy but it got easier with the second try. Soon Kerry and I will be treated to Asian Chicken and Sesame Pork Chops one night for dinner.

Here we are with our aprons having fun

DC Summertime Fun

DC in the summertime is typically pretty miserable–especially in early August. Yesterday Sally and I got lucky as the weather could not have been more cooperative–low 80s light breeze with sun–and a noticeable lack of humidity.

We started off with lunch with a giant bowl of freshly made guacamole made in front of us in a large morter and pestal at Oyamel. Then we enjoyed

Chilaquiles con chorizo y huevo estrellado Fresh hand-made tortilla chips with chorizo, chipotle salsa, Chihuahua cheese, cilantro, red onion and a fried egg

Carnitas con salsa de tomatillo
Confit of baby pig with green tomatillo sauce, pork rinds, onions and cilantro

Sopa Tarasca estilo pátzcuaro
A black bean soup with light Mexican cream and cotija aged cheese, served with a side of crispy ancho chili, avocado and fried tortilla.

Sated after all the food, we wandered over the National Portrait Gallery where Sally had fun with all the Nam June Paik’s tv and giant America and enjoyed (ever so slightly) the folk art wing of the gallery.

Art & Culture bill filled, we took the advice of a wandering convict in an orange jumpsuit and went over to the new National Crime and Punishment museum. There was a large volume of history on how rules have been enforced from the middle ages until today. The musuem holds an authentic Tommy Gun from the 1930s as well as many of the cars used by Chicago gangs in the 20s.

Sally and I tried all the interactive aspects such as the SWAT team gun fire simulator and the lie detector tests. We also practice our safe cracking skills (though Sal was way better at this than I ); she taught a little boy how to do it too.

We also saw the set of America’s Most Wanted where the live call center is based in DC. The program that aired last night came from the DC studio.

Needing a little boost after all the gore and crime, Sal and I headed over to Georgetown for a cupcake. Hiding up on 1209 Potomac St, Georgetown Cupcake was not a secret as the line snaked out the door and up the street.
Hopping in line, we decided between decadent flavors such as chocolate ganache, lemon berry, red velvet, vanilla squared, and chocolate coconut. Yum!!

Hanging out over by dean & deluca with our six pack of cupcakes, it was the perfect way to end the day.
